How a Teacher Turned a Love for Books into a Writing Career!

Writing has been a secret passion of mine for years. You may wonder why I kept it a secret? I had very little self-confidence as an author. It wasn't until I was in my 40's that I actually felt I could do it.

Let me explain.

Writing was required in high school. You remember the drill... essays, theme papers, and research papers! There was a lot of mandatory pushing of the pen in those days. Honestly, I hated it during that time. It wasn't that I found it difficult, I found it boring.

I enjoyed writing the fun stuff like poems and short stories, but I never really felt I excelled at it. In fact, I kept my journal hidden and rarely even wrote in it. I guess it was because I didn't get 'rave reviews' from any of my teachers. I'd convinced myself that I wasn't good at it.

Crazy, right?

Why do we always need that pat on the back?

College was even more of the requisite work. In fact, by the time I finished college and my masters degree, I was done with it. I had a few years however, between my two masters degrees (yes, a glutton for punishment!). It was then that I enjoyed reading and writing for pleasure!!

One of the stories I wrote during this time was a children's story based on the life of my great- grandmother called Dori's Gift. I stashed the notebook on a shelf and almost forgot about it until I had started back to graduate school while working two jobs. I had a writing class that asked for a short story as part of my final grade. The professor informed us it could be anything we'd written in the last few years. I was too busy to write something new, so I pulled Dori's Gift off the shelf.

My professor fell in love with the story and encouraged me to pursue publication. I kind of shrugged it off the first time she mentioned it, but when she wrote me a personal note about it, I thought- why not?

And that is how my writing career began! I seriously owe it all to this person who was an encourager.

Dori's Gift was published in 2014 and now I have twenty more books in publication. It has been the most amazing, surprising blessing! Do I have tons more time for writing now? No! I have learned how to manage my time (thanks to the Ultimate Writer's Planner!)  and block out writing time.

If you are a procrastinator, it's time to stop putting it off!

Stop giving yourself excuses!

Create your new path that starts today!!
